Coasts, Oceans, Ports, & Rivers Institute

A Brief History

Created in 2000, the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI) is a semi-autonomous institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the country's oldest national engineering society. COPRI's services are designed to complement ASCE's traditional civil engineering base, and to attract new categories of members (non-civil engineer allied professionals) who seek to enhance their professional and technical development.

The Coasts, Ocean, Ports, and Rivers Institute of ASCE officially replaced the Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Division to serve as the multi disciplinary and international leader in improving the knowledge, teaching, development, and practice of civil engineering and other disciplines working in waterway environments. COPRI will continue to advance and disseminate scientific and engineering knowledge for our members who are engaged in the sustainable development and protection of coastal, ocean, ports, waterways, and wetlands. We will continue to foster communication and cooperation between domestic and international members in government, industry, and education.

Vision

Civil engineers, other engineers, scientists, managers, planners, and lawyers are engaged in the development and protection of the coastal, port, and river environments for the benefit of society in the U.S. and foreign countries. No multidisciplinary and international organization exists to provide a forum for communication among the diverse professionals in various countries.

The Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute will serve as a multidisciplinary and international leader in improving the knowledge, education, development, and practice of civil engineering and other disciplines in the coastal, ocean, port, and riverine environment for the benefit of society in the U.S. and other countries.

Mission

The mission of COPRI is stated as follows:

The Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute will advance and disseminate scientific and engineering knowledge to our diverse members engaged in sustainable development and protection of coasts, oceans, ports , waterways, and wetlands. We will also foster communication and cooperation among our domestic and international members in government, industry, and education.
