The American Society of Civil Engineers, US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the sponsoring organizations invite you to attend and participate in the third Orthotropic Bridge Conference. The objectives of this Conference are to present the latest developments in the design, construction, maintenance and repairs of orthotropic decks on bridges worldwide, and visit California orthotropic bridges in operation. Many of the leading engineers and researchers who contributed to the spectacular advances of orthotropic decks will present their views at this conference. The conference hotel will be the Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel. Mon 24: One-day workshop “International Orthotropic Deck Bridges.” Accepted countries are Belgium[high speed rail], Britain, China, Germany, Japan, Norway, & Russia.  Separate registration required.

Tue 25: One-day Free FHWA Orthotropic Bridge Workshop - In February 2012, the Federal Highway Administration published the Manual for Design, Construction, and Maintenance of Orthotropic Steel Deck Bridges.  The authorship team represents several world leading experts for Orthotropic Decks.  The new Manual presents an extensive summary of the current understanding and practical guidelines for application of orthotropic decks in bridge construction.  It includes new and updated topics including finite element analysis, fatigue assessment, fabrication, wearing surfaces, inspection, amongst others.  The new manual is based on over 40 years of research and experience since the last publication.  In this workshop, the authors will present each chapter of the manual including the design examples contained in the final chapter.  A question and answer session will provide ample opportunity for discussion with the experts. Separate registration is required.

Tue 25: Icebreaker Social 6pm-8pm (Seperate registration required)  ASCE Capital Branch is pleased to host a reception honoring our special guest, ASCE National Past-President, Andy Herrmann.  Hors d'oeuvres will be provided and a no-host bar will be available.  Registration for this event in NOT required and all conference attendees are invited. Those who have paid for the Ice Breaker Social with a credit card will have their money refunded.

Thur 27 Night: Bus tour of the San Francisco / Oakland Bay Bridge East Spans (SAS = Self-Anchoring Suspension) Orthotropic Spans plus Zampa Suspension. (included with conference cost)

Fri 28: 8:00 am to Noon — Morning session concludes the conference.

Fri 28: 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm - Workshop: “Lateral Bracing Systems for Steel Bridges.” Accepted speakers are:Dr Marwan Nader, PE of TY Lin and Dr Brian Maroney [SFOBB -SAS Towers]; Yong-Pil Kim, PE Caltrans [Antioch Bridge]; Dr Su Hao of ACII, Inc [I-35 Bridge Collaps]; & Motoshi Yamauchi, PE [Seismic Control Technologies, Japan].  Separate registration required.

Sat 29: Optional bus tour with planned stops at or near the Golden Gate Suspension, San Mateo Hayward, Miller Sweeney Bascule, Maritime Off -Ramp, Bay Area Rapid Transit BART subway railroad bridges with orthotropic steel decks. A more detailed text and map availible upon request.  (7:00 am to 10:00 pm); Separate registration required.

Sun 30: Optional boat tour East Spans SAS & Golden Gate Bridge. Transportation will be provided to Pier 39 of San Francisco standard tourist boat tour of San Francisco Bay.  (12:00 pm to 6:00 pm) Separate registration required.
